As mentioned before, my 4TheLove project is exploring the notions of creating just because! Of having the freedom to explore the uses of creativity for wellbeing and to not be held back my constrictions. For me it is also about using music in a different way around transitions and changes in life and health. Here are my ponderings on...
CREATIVITY, CONNECTION & IMPERFECTION
I have been reading a fantastic book called ‘The Gifts of Imperfections’ by Dr. Brene Brown. Essentially it is about letting go of who you think you should be and being an authentic version of yourself-learning to live wholeheartedly. A big part of this is learning to be vulnerable to others to stay connected and show our ‘warts and all’ to grow though this.
This is something that resonated within my creative practice. When we sing or show something we have made ourselves it can sometimes feel scary and exposing. I have always believed in what I write to be a honest and true account of life experiences but when it comes to sharing it I sometimes find it incredibly hard to want to put anything out there for this fear of judgement that it doesn’t measure up. But whose stick are we measuring to?
Creating is not just exclusive to ‘talented or skilled’ people. It is available for all of us to access. People choose to create for and in many ways. For me it is a huge part of my identity and what I have always done to express myself but in many ways without realising, it has also been a therapy. Through using our creativity we can feel connected to a wider purpose and at the end of the day, that is what I believe it is all about.
So why should we create to feel connected and stop worrying about being perfect?
There are some days I feel paralysed by the notions of perfection. I can’t possibly show any of my songs, work, perform until it is ‘perfect’. But once I realise that perfect isn’t actually a 'real' human attribute I will ever be able to attain, I suddenly find an incredible freedom to be ‘imperfectly’ perfect and creative which has been liberating! So we don’t need to feel worried about the judgement to ‘try and be original’ because we already are!
“THE ONLY UNIQUE CONTRIBUTION THAT WE WILL EVER MAKE IN THIS WORLD WILL BE BORN OF OUR CREATIVITY”
So as I sit and write this on a sunny day in April, I have been going through my back log of songs with my thoughts of ‘not quite there yet, almost perfect, not a great recording, needs a bridge, lyrics need to be tweaked etc’ and thought I would share a little demo of a song I wrote and roughly (yes roughly) recorded the other day. I would never have felt like sharing this usually and it would sit in my bank of songs waiting to be recorded but what the hell? Let’s be creative, connected and perfectly imperfect! Happy creating and I leave you will the wise words of Brene Brown.
“ CREATIVITY, WHICH IS THE EXPRESSION OF OUR ORIGINALITY, HELPS US TO STAY MINDFUL THAT WHAT WE BRING TO THE WORLD IS COMPLETELY ORIGINAL AND CANNOT BE COMPARED.” DR BRENE BROWN
